Not just teeth, but your entire oral health

In many practices, the focus is mainly on cavities. At 3D Tandarts we look further:
we focus on the entire oral health – teeth, gums, jawbone, and oral hygiene.

We assist you with:

  • gingivitis (bleeding, red, swollen gums)
  • periodontitis (deeper infection with bone loss and pockets);
  • recurring gum problems despite good brushing;
  • maintenance after previous periodontal treatment.

This way, you receive the care you expect from a dental hygienist, combined with the expertise and responsibility of a dentist.

Oral hygiene at 3D Tandarts: above and below the gumline

Our approach always begins with thorough oral hygiene:

  • Removal of plaque and tartar above the gumline;
  • Deep cleaning (scaling & root planing) in gum pockets, with local anesthesia if needed;
  • Use of fine hand instruments and/or ultrasonic tools;
  • If necessary brushing instruction and personalized advice on interdental brushes and floss .

We take the time to explain:

  • where the problems are located;
  • which tools you should use at home;
  • which check-up schedule is right for you (e.g., every 3, 4, or 6 months).

What is a laser-assisted gum treatment?

A laser-assisted gum treatment is an additional step on top of standard periodontal therapy.

First, we mechanicallyremove as much tartar and biofilm as possible. Then, in selected areas, we use a diode laser to:

  • further reduce bacteria in the deeper gum pockets;
  • help remove inflamed tissue along the root surfaces;
  • deeply disinfect the area around the root thoroughly.

Many patients experience this combination as:

  • less burdensome than intensive scraping alone;
  • leaving a fresher feeling immediately after the treatment;
  • supportive in gaining control over recurring inflammation.

Important: the laser does not replace manual cleaning, but supports it where beneficial.

Who is laser-assisted gum treatment suitable for?

We mainly use laser-assisted gum treatment for:

  • regularly bleeding gums (gingivitis) that keeps returning;
  • mild to moderate periodontitis with pockets that respond poorly to cleaning alone;
  • patients who have already had extensive treatment and want additional support;
  • People with risk factors such as smoking or diabetes, where we aim to limit the infection as much as possible.

During a periodontal examination , we measure the pockets, assess bleeding, and take X-rays if needed. Based on this, we discuss:

  • which teeth require deep cleaning ;
  • in which pockets we recommend to use the laser as an additional step;
  • how often you should return for follow-up care and check-ups.

How does the treatment work?

  1. Intake and gum examination
    • Discussion of your symptoms (bleeding gums, loose teeth, bad breath);
    • Clinical examination and pocket measurement;
    • X-rays if needed to evaluate bone levels and inflammation around the roots.
  2. Basic oral hygiene and deep cleaning
    • Professional cleaning above the gumline;
    • Scaling and root planing below the gumline (with anesthesia if necessary);
    • Explanation of brushing and interdental cleaning techniques.
  3. Laser-assisted treatment (selective)
    • A thin laser fiber is inserted into selected pockets;
    • A diode laser is used to additionally target bacteria and inflamed tissue;
    • The procedure is usually quick and often perceived as less painful than intensive manual cleaning alone.
  4. Check-up and aftercare
    • After a few weeks, we re-examine the gums;
    • If needed, we repeat certain treatments or laser support;
    • You receive advice on the long-term maintenance of your gum health.

What will you notice after the treatment?

After a good gum treatment — with or without laser — many patients notice:

  • less bleeding during brushing and interdental cleaning;
  • a fresher breath;
  • gums that feel firmer;
  • sometimes minor feeling of having loose teeth.

In the first few days, you may experience:

  • temporarily sensitive gums;
  • slight discomfort when chewing;
  • occasional minor bleeding.

This is normal and usually disappears within a few days. You will receive clear aftercare instructions (brushing, interdental cleaning, rinsing).

What can you do yourself for periodontitis or sensitive gums?

A successful gum treatment is always a team effort between you and us.

Your role:

  • brush carefully twice a day;
  • use interdental brushes every day, according to our advice;
  • reduce smoking as much as possible or quit;
  • do not postpone your check-ups and follow-up appointments.

Our role:

  • detect problems early;
  • provide professional cleaning above and below the gumline;
  • where necessary, support treatment with laser;
  • monitor your progress and adjust the plan as needed.

Costs and insurance coverage

The cost of gum treatments depends on:

  • the severity of the periodontitis;
  • the number of quadrants being treated;
  • the number of sessions and any laser support;
  • follow-up and aftercare visits.

For adults, periodontal treatments are often (partially) reimbursed through the supplementary dental insurance. For children and adolescents up to 18 years old, many dental treatments, including gum care, are in principle covered by the basic insurance (with a Dutch basic insurance and BSN).

We can provide a cost estimate in advance, so you can check coverage with your insurer if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions about Oral Hygiene & Laser-Assisted Gum Treatment

What is the difference between a dental hygienist and the care at 3D Tandarts?
In many practices, you are referred only to a dental hygienist for gum problems.
At 3D Tandarts you receive both hygienist care and dental care under one roof. It means that:

  • we professionally clean your gums (above and below the gums);
  • we perform a complete periodontal examination (periodontal charting);
  • the dentist makes the diagnosis and the treatment plan ;
  • where appropriate, we support the treatment with laser therapy.

You don’t need to search for a separate dental hygienist — your gum health is monitored directly within our practice.

What exactly is a laser-assisted gum treatment?
Laser-assisted gum treatment is an addition to conventional periodontal treatment.

First, we mechanically remove tartar and biofilm (scaling & root planing). Then, in selected pockets, we use a diode laser to: diode laser:

  • further reduce bacteria in deeper pockets ;
  • treat inflamed tissue in the pocket area;
  • deeply disinfect the area around the root surfaces. deep disinfection.

The laser does not replace manual cleaning, but supports it where it adds value.

Does a laser gum treatment hurt?
Most patients find the laser treatment quite tolerable:

  • you may feel a slight warmth or tingling in the gums;
  • the procedure is often perceived as less painful than intensive manual “scraping” alone.

For deeper pockets or sensitive areas, we can provide local anesthesiato make the treatment as comfortable as possible.
After the treatment, the gums may feel temporarily sensitive or sore , but this usually subsides within a few days.

Is a laser-assisted gum treatment safe?
Yes, when performed by a properly trained dentist using a suitable dental laser device.

We:

  • adjust the settings according to the situation and area;
  • use the laser only in selected pockets where it makes sense;
  • always combine the treatment with thorough professional cleaning and clear oral hygiene instructions.

Good daily home care remains essential: the laser is an additional tool, not a “magical” replacement for brushing and interdental cleaning.

How often should I return for oral hygiene or periodontal aftercare?
This varies per person and depends on the severity of the gum problems. On average, we see:

  • for stable, healthy gums: check-up and cleaning every 6 months;
  • for increased risk (e.g., early periodontitis, smoking, diabetes): often every 3–4 months;
  • after intensive periodontal treatment: a more precise, personalized aftercare schedule .

During your gum check-up, we will discuss the frequency needed in your situation to keep your gums as stable as possible.

Does a laser treatment completely cure periodontitis?
Periodontitis is a chronic conditionit is more accurate to talk about keeping it under control rather than "completely curing it".

A laser-assisted treatment can help to:

  • further reduce bacterial load in deeper pockets;
  • better control inflammatory activity;
  • together with good oral hygiene and regular aftercare, keep the situation as stable as possible.

Success depends strongly on your home care (brushing, interdental cleaning, not smoking) and following the recommended aftercare schedule.

Are oral hygiene and laser-assisted gum treatments covered by insurance?
At adults , oral hygiene and periodontal treatments are usually covered under supplementary dental insurance. Without supplementary insurance, you pay the costs yourself.

At children and adolescents up to 18 years old , many dental treatments — including gum care — are generally covered by the basic health insurance (with a Dutch basic insurance and BSN).

We can provide a cost estimate so you can check with your insurer what is covered in your plan, if desired.

What can I do myself to keep my gums healthy after treatment?
Your own oral hygiene is crucial for long-term results. Key points:

  • Brush thoroughly twice a day with a manual or electric toothbrush;
  • Use interdental brushes and floss daily between teeth and molars;
  • if possible quit smoking (smoking is a major risk factor for periodontitis);
  • your monitoring and follow-up appointments comply, even if you experience few complaints yourself.

Together, this ensures that your gums remain as healthy and stable as possible .
